Medieval instruments

[plucked instruments ]

[bowed instruments]

In opposition to Baroque and Renaissance instruments which are rebuilt based on the surviving originals are Medieval instruments designed from illustrations like early paintings and frescos. Those reliable and unique sources gave us an idea of shape and sometimes size however mechanical part of an instrument as well as the acoustical one has to be done by the maker's experience and not only by one's imagination.

All my instruments are rebuilt from seasoned European tone woods. None of them are made from ordinary wood used in carpentry nor from plywood from bricolage shop. Since those instruments are musical instruments a big care has to be applied in selecting of materials.

Soundboards are made from Italian alpine spruce; other parts of instruments which require harder woods will be done from Balkan alpine maple or other European woods like walnut, cherry, ash and hop-hornbeam; the last mentioned will be used for bows.
